“Peter”

PAssed AwAy peacefully at his home in Port Credit, Ontario, on Sunday, November 28, 2021. Peter is survived, and loved dearly, by his wife of 54 years, Winnie, and son Sam (Emily Dawson) and daughter Bridgette (Dr. Frank Ritacca), cherished grandsons Charles and Joseph Ritacca, and family and friends. Born in Cobourg, Ontario, in 1940, Peter graduated from the University of Toronto in 1961 and McMaster University in 1965. He was a banker and then a teacher for the first 15 years of his professional career. In the mid-1970s he moved with his family to the Maritimes, where he owned and operated a number of businesses. Peter and family resided in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for several decades before returning to Ontario in 2009. He was a sportsman, enjoying and excelling in many athletic pursuits from early childhood to his later years, especially basketball and hockey, but above all his passion was the game of golf. Peter first teed off at age 11 and embarked on a lifelong quest for the perfect round. He represented Canada against the United States as a junior golfer in the mid-1950s; was a two-time Nova Scotia tournament champion in the mid-1970s; represented New Brunswick at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship in 2004; and competed at the club and provincial levels in the years in between. He thoroughly enjoyed the competition on the course and the camaraderie off it. Peter was kind, generous, thoughtful and compassionate. He was warm with a great sense of humour, and intelligent and insightful. He was a coach and a community builder, and one of his great joys was the opportunity to mentor others. The McCaig family wishes to send a special thank you for the exemplary medical care by Dr. E. Nasirzadeh, Dr. B. Ernst, Dr. J. Nikhil, Dr. A. Burns, Dr. A. Gupta, the Credit Valley Hospital team, and his personal nurses Julie and Hester. Thank you. His body has been donated to medical education and research at the University of Toronto.
