GERALDINE LEILA TEWNION CHERINGTON

December 16,1931– May 13,2023

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our mom Geraldine Leila Tewnion Cherington. Our mom graced this world for a wonderful 91 years. Born in the small farming community of Harding, Manitoba, where she rode her pony Nevada and went to school in a covered wagon heated with a wood stove. She was big sister to Jean Tewnion Young and a devoted daughter to her parents Iva and Alex Tewnion, who fondly referred to her as “The Duchess”. She married Tom Cherington, whom she thought was the most interesting man ever to come to Brandon. Together, they brought two daughters into this world, Pam and Shelley Cherington. And even though they didn’t eventually live their lives together, they remained caring friends who always put family first. After moving from Winnipeg to Montreal, and then back to Winnipeg, Gerry eventually settled in Burlington, moving there in 1966 with Tom and their girls, and her beloved Cocker Spaniel Lady. Her professional career included managing Dental Health Group where many of her staff thought of her as a second mom.

These details are the framework of a life that was well lived, filled with love and friends that adored her, including her daughter’s friends who often referred to her as Mrs. C or the ever popular Ger Bear, and loved to include her in everything. Mom was an elegant presence at any gathering that really knew how to enjoy herself and always brought much fun. She had an infectious laugh, incomparable personal style and a voice that you could listen to forever. She met life’s challenges with an indomitable spirit and strength. Her nights were often filled with endless phone calls with friends from all stages of her life, and of course her beloved Facebook. She knew how to nurture and treasure lifelong friendships, a tribute to her genuine character. She was a loving mother-in-law to Chris Volpe, and loved to enjoy a good meal with him. Proud aunt to Mark Gill and Todd (Rachel Gillingham) Gill, great-aunt to Trent Gill, Tyler (Laura) Gill and Trista Gill, great-great-aunt to Novah Gill.

Though the expression is sometimes used too casually, to know her was to love her. She will be missed by many, but mostly by her two daughters, who considered her the core of their universe. Our thoughts will be with her for every day to come. We are so very grateful she was our mom. We take some comfort in knowing that mom was loved and adored to the very end, beyond any measure of time. And more than anyone, Geraldine Leila Tewnion Cherington - Gerry - knew how to love and adore right back. Her favourite thing to say to us was always “feel my arms around you”. Mom, please feel our arms around you now. Always and forever.
