1935 – 2023

With great sadness we announce the passing of Louis-Philippe Lemay on May 5, 2023, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Masson, QC, on July 20, 1935, son of Gérard Lemay and Clara Poirier, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gilberte (born Demers); their daughters, Julie and Marie-France; and their granddaughter, Victoire (Simon Bouchard). He also leaves his brother, Roger Lemay; and his sister, Ida Lemay; many nieces and nephews, friends and golf partners.

The family wishes to thank his outstanding medical team in Ottawa for ten years of dedication and support, as well as his care team in Montreal. Graduate of the University of Ottawa (Electrical Engineering 1959) and recipient of the prestigious Athlone Scholarship, Philippe Lemay joined IBM Canada after obtaining his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College in London, England in 1961. At IBM, he held several management positions and served as Vice President and Sales Manager of the Data Processing Division before leaving in 1974 to start his own computer services firm, IST Inc. which had 300 employees by 1979, when Mr. Lemay joined AMDAHL of Silicon Valley. Louise-Philippe Lemay was President and General Manager of AMDAHL France and AMDAHL Italy, and then Vice President of Information Services in California. He joined Canada Post in June 1994 as Executive Vice President of Business Development. There, he developed Postel, the world’s first electronic post office in a joint venture with the Bank of Montreal and devised an electronic postmark (e-postmark), legally protecting individual electronic documents (a first), adopted by the Universal Postal Union in 2004. He also created Innovapost, a company that provides shared information technology services to the Canada Post Group of Companies. Louis-Philippe will be remembered for demonstrating innovation and leadership through the advancement of technology solutions that are transforming our world. He wanted us to celebrate his life. A Mass will be held on June 7th, at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa at 2 p.m.

A reception for family and friends will follow at the Hunt Club: 1 Hunt Club Rd., Ottawa at 4 p.m. White flowers can be sent to the Cathedral for the mass. No lilies please due to allergies. For those who wish to make donations in his name: Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
