Writer, critic, teacher, and athlete; beloved friend, brother, father and grandfather. His wit and brilliance will be deeply missed.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, John overcame poverty and illness to graduate with firstclass honours from the University of Glasgow. He won a Thouron fellowship in the early 1960s and completed his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. Until his retirement in 1998, John was professor of English at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough College (now UT Scarborough Campus). Mourned by daughters, Kristin (Jim), Melissa (Greg), and Maggie (Jody); former spouse, Nancy; brother, George; grandchildren, Juno, Nicole, Robin, Raven, Catherine, Rebecca, Ciaran, Mairead, and Asa. Predeceased by parents, James (Jimmy) Kay and Mary McKenna Kay; brother, Jim Kay; sister, Mary McGregor.
